Description
South Fork Water Board is recruiting a full-time Water Treatment Plant Operator to join our team of water treatment professionals. This position is responsible for a variety of tasks associated with the operation and maintenance of domestic water production facilities, pump stations, and storage facilities.
Work is performed on site at our facilities in Oregon City. The schedule for this position may include weekends, swing shifts, and/or graveyard shifts, with some shifts eligible to work four 10-hour shifts per week. Swift and graveyard shifts earn a pay differential.
Starting pay is dependent on Water Treatment Operator Certification level and experience. This position may be filled by an operator in training at $29.98 per hour, with the opportunity for increased pay when certification is achieved.

Examples of Duties
The list of duties is a representative sample of the work appropriate to this class and does not include all the duties or specific tasks that may be assigned to a particular position:
- Operate electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow of raw and finished water.
- Test water samples to determine alkalinity, hardness, pH, turbidity, chlorine residual and impurities through both traditional laboratory and jar tests.
- Feed specified amounts of chemicals into water and adjust automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemical into tanks to disinfect, aid filtration, clarify water and meet the target pH.
- Monitor charts, flow indicators, and water level indicators to ensure effective and efficient operations and maintain water quality.
- Compute and record data such as residual content of chemicals, water turbidity and water pressure in daily logs and monthly reports.
- Perform equipment checks on screens, pumps and motors; make minor repairs and adjustments as needed.
- Attend continuing education programs to maintain certification and expand knowledge of water treatment and supply.
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned, including but not limited to grounds maintenance and janitorial tasks.
Typical Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Water Treatment Operator Certificate from the Oregon Health Division or the ability to obtain such certification within six months of hire
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen
- Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate Degree in Water Quality Technology or related field, or high school diploma and two years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated mechanical skills and abilities
- Experience in water treatment or related field

Job Conditions
Work is performed in person, primarily at the South Fork Water Board treatment plant. Operators work indoors and outdoors in a variety of conditions, including exposure to noise and dirt, working in confined spaces, and working with hazardous materials. Duties involve standing, walking, grasping, sitting, and bending. The position requires periodic lifting of 50-pound items.
Operators are periodically required to drive South Fork Water Board vehicles to nearby sites. Operators may be required to work weekends and nights, and some shifts require the operator to work alone with phone access to an on-call supervisor.
